Focus area 5: Human, Health and Social Dynamics, Including Issues Related to Service Delivery

The Human, Health and Social Dynamics (HHSD) research and innovation Research Focus Area at CPUT intersects the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 16, 17 all which aim to address an array of social, economic, health, political, legal, scientific and technological benefits, designed to stimulate trans/multi/interdisciplinary thinking to challenge South African researchers, industry and policy developers to answer questions, create new disciplines and develop new relevant and applicable technologies. We aim to contribute to a greater global understanding and build knowledge of shifting human, health and social dynamics, support trans/multi/interdisciplinary collaborative research and respond to the needs of our South African society. The Research Focus Area’s opportunities are to integrate the strong theoretical and empirical links enabling the following multidisciplinary research approaches to integrate personal, societal and environmental transformation to:

  • Promote humanity and humaneness in the 21st century;
  • Create spaces where researchers collaborate and conduct research in a trans/multi/interdisciplinary manner across disciplines, faculties and units at CPUT;
  • Develop the capacity to deconstruct boundaries and interrogate the ways in which society may intersect and reinforce each other;
  • Create a social and structural justice orientation that enables working towards a transformed society.
