Five Mechatronics students are the lucky recipients of full scholarships valued at over R400 000 from the Renewable Energy Scholarship Fund (RESF).

The scholarships cover tuition and daily living and learning expenses, such as textbooks and study material.

The RESF is managed by Globeleq South Africa Management Services who, together with its consortium partners, owns three renewable energy facilities in South Africa.

The scholarship was funded by these three independent power producers (IPPs), namely the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, Droogfontein Solar Power near Kimberley and De Aar Solar Power.

They are among the very first large scale renewable power plants to be built in the country. Some of the scholarship recipients will be selected to gain work experience at these plants.

Globeleq MD, Mark Pickering, says the three IPPs have invested more than R2 million in the scholarship programme, which will develop young engineering students for the renewable energy and other engineering sectors.

“We aim to help meet the demand in the industry for qualified engineers, create a skills pipeline for our company and also support and contribute to the industry and the country as a whole.”

Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field that combines traditional electrical, electronic, mechanical, control and computer engineering skills.

The next round of scholarships for Mechatronics students will start in July 2015.
