True to its mandate to professionalise the Wholesale and Retail (W&R) sector, the CPUT-based Retail Leadership Academy recently awarded qualifications to hundreds of retail managers who completed its training programmes.

Addressing the certification ceremony, Retail Leadership Academy Manager, Andiswa Mrasi, said CPUT responds to the country’s skills shortage in the retail sector. Mrasi added that the academy seeks to professionalise the retail industry.

She added that 321 learners have obtained qualifications.

The Academy forms an integral part of the W&R Leadership Chair, which was established at CPUT in 2014 as a result of funding from the W&R Sector Education and Training Authority.

“The purpose of the Academy is to improve the skills and knowledge of leaders, managers and academics relevant to the wholesale and retail sector,” said Mrasi. “The focus is on Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) qualifications and short courses for the retail industry.”

She added that the certificates and training programmes offered at the Academy include QCTO qualifications through partnerships with public and private providers, and other credit and non-credit bearing short training programs.

Keynote speaker, Gerald Dube who is the Senior Retail Operations Manager at Spar Western Cape, made an analogy between the workings of farming and building a career in retail.

He said patience is key for farming as things do not always go your way. “You are a laying a foundation for the next generation,” he added. “Growth is important but you cannot do it on your own.”

During the ceremony certificates in Retail Financial Management, Retail Operations Management and Retail Store Manager Qualification were awarded to the successful students.
