Filling tummies and dreams with the Peninsula School Feeding Association

WISH LIST: Public Relations lecturer Deirdre Porthen addresses learners from H.J Kroneberg Primary in Maitland WISH LIST: Public Relations lecturer Deirdre Porthen addresses learners from H.J Kroneberg Primary in Maitland

Some learners at H.J Kroneberg Primary school will have more than just their tummies filled thanks to the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) and CPUT students.

The students recently launched the #FeedADream campaign which aims to fulfill the wishes of learners at the Maitland school.

After learners were fed their nutritious lunch of mince with samp and carrots last week they met with the CPUT Public Relations students who encouraged them to dream big and then captured their wishes.
Some of the wishes ranged from a Spiderman costume, visits to Ratanga Junction and the aquarium or a simple boat trip and far-fetched ideas like turning into Ironman.
H.J Kroneberg Primary has 560 learners with roughly 200 of them using the PSFA’s services.
Principal Yul Cupido says children from all kinds of homes use the PSFA services and the school cooks often use their own initiative to jazz up the meals making them very popular.
“Often a child who hasn’t brought a sandwich to school will eat here,” he says.
CPUT PR lecturer Deidre Porthen says the students can easily fill some of the wishes, however, will have to rely on their PR training to work their networks and find additional sponsors.
“Something like a visit to the airport to see the planes can be relatively easy to arrange. Hopefully we can fulfill all the wishes, even the stranger ones!” she says.
